The Crucifixion â Papyrus 66 (đ66)
"Behold thy mother!" & the staurogram (âŗ¨)
We are excited to bring this handcrafted replica of Papyrus 66 (đ66), also known as Bodmer II, one of the earliest and most substantial surviving Greek manuscripts of the Gospel of John.
This ancient papyrus fragment preserves portions of John 19:25â32, recounting events surrounding the crucifixion of Jesus Christ.
The recto preserves the moving account of Jesus speaking to His mother Mary and the beloved disciple during His crucifixion. Even in His suffering, Jesus demonstrates His compassion by entrusting His mother to the disciple, declaring:
"Behold thy mother!" â John 19:27 (KJV)
Verso (Back) â John 19:31â32
The verso records the Jewish leaders requesting that Pontius Pilate order the legs of those crucified to be broken and their bodies removed before the approaching Sabbath.Â
THE STAUROGRAM â AN EARLY CHRISTIAN SYMBOL OF THE CROSS
One of the most extraordinary features of this manuscript is the presence of an ancient Christian symbol known as the staurogram (âŗ¨), appearing on the verso within John 19:31.
Formed by combining the Greek letters tau (Τ) and rho (Υ), the symbol was incorporated directly into an abbreviated form of the Greek word for "cross." Its distinctive shape resembles a person upon a cross, with the loop of the rho suggesting a head and the tau forming the cross.
Papyrus 66 is among the most significant early witnesses to the Greek New Testament. Originally part of a papyrus codex containing substantial portions of John's Gospel, the manuscript is traditionally associated with a discovery near Dishna, Upper Egypt, around 1952.
