A Letter of Grace & Reconciliation | Papyrus 87 Philemon Replica | Early Christian Manuscript

This handcrafted replica is based on Papyrus 87 (𝔓87), one of the earliest surviving New Testament papyri and the oldest known manuscript witness to Paul’s Letter to Philemon. Dating to the early 3rd century AD, 𝔓87 preserves portions of Philemon 13–15 and 24–25 in the original Greek.

The Epistle to Philemon is one of Paul’s shortest and most personal letters, written concerning Onesimus and his relationship with Philemon.
In the portion preserved by 𝔓87, Paul explains that he wished to keep Onesimus with him so that he might minister to Paul during his imprisonment, but Paul refused to act without Philemon’s willing consent. He then reflects on the possibility that their temporary separation had occurred for a greater purpose.
The fragment later resumes near the conclusion of the letter in verses 24–25, preserving part of Paul’s closing greetings and final benediction.

The original 𝔓87 survives from an ancient papyrus codex and measures only approximately 1.4 × 1.9 inches. Despite its small size, it is an important witness to the transmission of the New Testament text..
