Genesis 1 • The Ten Commandments & Shema • Psalm 23

This collection brings together three ancient Hebrew manuscripts preserving some of the most recognizable passages of the Old Testament: Genesis 1, the Ten Commandments and Shema, and Psalm 23.

Together, these replicas give a glimpse into the preservation and transmission of the Hebrew Scriptures across the centuries. The collection includes 4Q7, preserving portions of the creation account from Genesis; the Nash Papyrus, containing portions of the Ten Commandments followed by the Shema; and 5/6Hev 1b, preserving words from Psalm 23. Each replica is individually handcrafted to reflect the appearance and material of the surviving manuscript as closely as possible.

Nash Papyrus — “Thou shall not murder… Hear, O Israel, the LORD our God…”

Exodus 20 + Deuteronomy 5–6

The Nash Papyrus is an ancient Hebrew manuscript preserving portions of the Ten Commandments and the Shema. Dating to approximately the second to first century BC, it was discovered in Egypt and, before the discovery of the Dead Sea Scrolls, was the oldest known manuscript containing text from the Hebrew Bible.

One of the most interesting features of the Nash Papyrus is the combination of passages it preserves. Its text of the Ten Commandments reflects wording associated with both Exodus 20 and Deuteronomy 5, and is followed by the beginning of the Shema from Deuteronomy 6: “Hear, O Israel: The LORD our God, the LORD is one.” These passages would become central to Jewish faith and worship, making this small manuscript an important early witness to the Hebrew Scriptures.

Hebrew Manuscript 5/6Hev 1b — “He leads me beside still waters…”

Psalm 23

Bring home a meaningful connection to one of the Bible’s most beloved passages with this handcrafted replica of 5/6Hev 1b, Plate 891, Fragment 3—an ancient Hebrew manuscript fragment measuring only approximately 2 × 2 inches and preserving portions of Psalm 23.

Discovered in the Cave of Letters at Nahal Hever near the Dead Sea, this manuscript is part of the broader collection commonly known as the Dead Sea Scrolls. Dating to approximately the late first century BC to early first century AD, it is nearly 2,000 years old and preserves an early Hebrew witness to Psalm 23.

4Q7 — “In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth…”

Genesis 1:1

Bring home one of the world’s earliest surviving witnesses to the opening words of Scripture. This handcrafted replica reproduces 4Q7 (4QGenesisᵍ), a genuine Dead Sea Scroll discovered among the caves of Qumran overlooking the Dead Sea. Written over two thousand years ago, this remarkable manuscript preserves portions of the creation account from Genesis 1.

Unlike ordinary paper reproductions, each parchment replica is handcrafted on real natural goat vellum parchment—a premium material chosen despite its higher cost because nothing else so faithfully recreates the look, feel, and durability of the writing surface on which this ancient Dead Sea Scroll was originally written.
