The Black Horse

Papyrus 24 (𝔓²⁴ / P.Oxy. X 1230) — Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse Replica

Own a handcrafted replica of Papyrus 24 (𝔓²⁴), an early Greek manuscript fragment of the Book of Revelation dating to the early 4th century AD.

This double-sided replica preserves Revelation 5:5–8 on the recto and Revelation 6:5–8 on the verso. The fragment measures approximately 3" × 1.2" and is displayed in a 4" × 6" double-sided magnetic acrylic floating display, allowing both sides to be viewed.

The verso contains Revelation 6:5–8, preserving one of Revelation’s most dramatic scenes. It records the opening of the third seal and the appearance of the Black Horse, whose rider holds a pair of scales—imagery associated with famine, scarcity, and the rising cost of food. The passage then continues with the fourth seal and the Pale Horse, whose rider is named Death, with Hades following behind. Together, these passages form part of the famous Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse and portray the devastating consequences of war, famine, death, and judgment.

The recto contains Revelation 5:5–8, including the vision of the Lion of the tribe of

Judah and the Lamb.

Papyrus 24 is part of the famous Oxyrhynchus Papyri, discovered in Egypt, and is preserved today at the Yale Divinity Library in New Haven, Connecticut. As an early surviving witness to the Greek text of Revelation, 𝔓²⁴ offers a tangible way to study and display these extraordinary biblical passages.

Each Sacred Text Replica begins with careful research and close study of the surviving ancient manuscript. The manuscript image is reproduced on premium Egyptian papyrus, reflecting the material of the original.

The papyrus fibers are carefully cut and worked to recreate the irregular edges, lacunae, holes, and other signs of deterioration visible in the surviving manuscript. Because this finishing is performed individually rather than by automated cutting, subtle variations occur naturally, making each completed replica unique.

Modern Replica Only: This item is a newly created replica made for artistic, historical, and educational purposes. It is not an ancient artifact, an official museum facsimile, or an original manuscript.
