P. Köln Theol. 23, a portion of Papyrus 967 (Rahlfs 967), dating to approximately AD 200. Written in ancient Greek, this manuscript preserves portions of Daniel 7 from the Septuagint tradition.
Scripture Preserved
• Recto (front) — Daniel 7:11–14: Daniel witnesses the judgment of the fourth beast and the appearance of one like the Son of Man coming with the clouds of heaven, receiving authority over all nations and an everlasting kingdom.
• Verso (back) — Daniel 7:19–22: Daniel seeks understanding of the terrifying fourth beast, the ten horns, and the horn that wages war against the saints, until the Ancient of Days comes and judgment is given in favor of the saints.
Papyrus 967 is an important early Greek biblical manuscript containing portions of Ezekiel, Daniel, and Esther. Discovered in 1931 and dated to approximately AD 200, the original codex provides valuable evidence of the transmission of the Greek Old Testament centuries before many surviving medieval manuscripts.
The surviving leaves are now distributed among collections in Cologne, Dublin, Princeton, and Barcelona. This particular leaf is preserved in the University of Cologne Papyrus Collection in Germany.
Daniel 7:13–14 holds special significance because Jesus uses the title "Son of Man" throughout the Gospels, and the imagery of this passage is echoed in His teachings concerning His authority and glory.
Our Replicas
Each Sacred Text Replica begins with careful research and close study of the surviving ancient manuscript. The manuscript image is reproduced on premium Egyptian papyrus, reflecting the material of the original. The papyrus fibers are carefully cut and worked to recreate the irregular edges, lacunae, holes, and other signs of deterioration visible in the surviving manuscript. Because this finishing is performed individually rather than by automated cutting, subtle variations occur naturally, making each completed replica unique.
