Replica of Papyrus 9 (𝔓9) / P.Oxy. 402

Contains 1 John 4:11–12 on the recto and 1 John 4:14–17 on the verso—the side replicated in this display—featuring phrases such as “abides in him, and he in…”, “so we have come to believe…”, and “…love is perfected…”.

Papyrus 9 was discovered in Oxyrhynchus, Egypt, as part of the famous Oxyrhynchus Papyri collection unearthed in the late 19th century dating to the late 2nd or early 3rd century AD, Papyrus 9 (𝔓⁹) is among the earliest surviving fragments of the New Testament. The original leaf contains 1 John 4:11–12 on the recto and 1 John 4:14–17 on the verso—the side replicated in this display—featuring phrases such as “abides in him, and he in…”, “so we have come to believe…”, and “…love is perfected…”.

One of the most striking aspects of this early 3rd-century fragment is its remarkably informal and personal handwriting. Copied in a rough, uneven semi-uncial script, the letters vary greatly in size and shape, with several awkward strokes and occasional misspelled or unclear words. This suggests the scribe was likely an ordinary believer rather than a skilled professional copyist.
